Tennessee – Several people in Tennessee have been questioned by the FBI in connection with a meningitis outbreak. As reported by The Tennessean, the investigation concerning the outbreak that has left 751 people across the country ill and resulted in the deaths of 64 others is being lead by Massachusetts U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz.
The source of the outbreak was reportedly contaminated steroid medicine produced by Massachusetts-based New England Compounding Center. It was administered to patients in spinal injections for the treatment of pain.
Of the reported number of illnesses and deaths, a significant number were in Tennessee. Joan Peay of Nashville, who survived meningitis, is quoted in the report as stating of the investigation after meeting with an FBI agent, “They are creating a criminal case against New England Compounding Center…They are just at the point now where they are interviewing patients.”
