Oklahoma – A federal appeals court has upheld a decision by a lower court to void Oklahoma’s ban on marriage between same-sex couples. As reported by Reuters, the recent ruling by the three-judge panel of the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is one of several recent federal and state court decisions, including one concerning Utah, citing that such a ban is unconstitutional.
Multiple lawsuits have been filed in an attempt to have bans on same-sex marriage in several states overturned. The U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act, legislation that allowed states to refuse recognition of same-sex marriages granted under other state laws, in a decision last year.
As noted in the report, gay marriage is reportedly still on hold in the state, as well as Utah, pending the outcome of appeals.
Same-sex marriage is now legal in 19 states in the U.S. plus the District of Columbia.
