Baltimore – Johns Hopkins Hospital has agreed to pay $190 million in a settlement with thousands of former patients who were secretly recorded while receiving gynecological exams. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the former patients were those of Dr. Nikita Levy who used tiny cameras to record the genitals of many of his patients.
Authorities reportedly found 1,200 videos and hundreds of images during a search of Levy’s home. The doctor committed suicide several days after he was fired.
The faces of the patients are not visible on the recordings; therefore, the subjects could not be identified. Approximately 8,000 of Levy’s 12,600 former patients contacted attorneys after Levy’s actions were publicly revealed last year.
Jonathan Schochor, lead attorney for the women who were secretly recorded, is quoted by the AP as stating of those affected, “They are in fear, dismayed, angry, and anxious over a breach of faith, a breach of trust, a betrayal on the part of the medical system… Many of our clients still feel betrayed, and still feel the breach of trust they have experienced, and they have fallen out of the medical system.”
