Japan – Sony has agreed to a $15 million preliminary settlement in connection with a 2011 data breach. As reported by Polygon, a class action lawsuit was filed over the breach, which led to data from millions of user accounts being stolen.
The settlement has yet to be approved by a judge. In accordance with the agreement, plaintiffs would be provided free games, ree SOE Station cash, and other benefits.
Deputy commissioner of the Information Commissioner’s Office, David Smith, is quoted in the report as stating of the information breach, “If you are responsible for so many payment card details and log-in details, then keeping that personal data secure has to be your priority… In this case that just didn’t happen, and when the database was targeted — albeit in a determined criminal attack — the security measures in place were simply not good enough.”
