Washington, D.C. – Former mayor of Washington, D.C. Marion Barry has paid off outstanding traffic fines he accumulated over the past two and a half years, as reported by the Associated Press (AP). The District of Columbia’s Department of Motor Vehicles website showed a $0 balance for Barry’s 2002 Jaguar on Tuesday.
Barry reportedly had 21 unpaid tickets total that were over 60 days old. One dated back to February 2012. Days before paying the fines, he was involved in a minor accident, where he hit another vehicle, and received a citation for driving on the wrong side of the street, according to police.
Barry is quoted by the AP as stating of paying his fines in a statement, “I paid the balance of these tickets, in the amount of $2,339.00, from my own personal funds.”
He has attributed his recent accident to his blood sugar level being low at the time further stating, “…I want to set the record straight once and for all, for there were some Barry haters and members of the press who exaggerated the incident, causing the public to become unnecessarily alarmed.”
Barry, 78, is current a member of the D.C. city council.
