Dallas – A Texas catering business has reached a settlement with the Justice Department after being accused of citizen-discrimination. As reported by The Daily Caller, Culinaire International has agreed to pay the United States $26,460 for allegedly discriminating against employees based on their citizenship status.
According to the Justice Department, the business unlawfully discriminated against non-citizen employees by making it a requirement for them to provide additional proof of their eligibility to work in the United States.
Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights division, Molly Moran, is quoted as saying in a statement, “Employers cannot discriminate against workers by requiring them to produce more documents than necessary in the employment eligibility verification and reverification processes.”
As noted in the report, in addition to paying the penalties, Culinaire has also agreed to create a fund for back paying “potential economic victims,” make revisions to its work eligibility verification process, and receive training in Immigration and Nationality Act anti-discrimination rules.
