New York – The NYPD is requiring its best police officers to take a class in proper Twitter use. As reported by the New York Post, a memo was sent to commanding officers following a series of incidents where posts were made on the top social network that were deemed controversial.
According to the Post, the course is designed to prevent embarrassing posts from being made by officers, such as one where a fatal accident occurred when a woman using an iPad fell onto Union Square subway tracks was mentioned.
The post sent from the personal account of Capt. Thomas Harnisch of Harlem is quoted as stating in reference to the incident, “Let me guess, driver’s fault right?”
A source is quoted in the report as stating of the course, “I think the training is a good idea. A lot of COs are a bit older, so they might not know how. They may not realize the power or the damage one wrong message can do.”
