New Jersey – A 32-year-old New Jersey woman who was holding down three part-time jobs recently died while taking a nap in her car between shifts. As reported by Reuters, Maria Fernandes, was apparently overcome by fumes released from a gas can while sitting in the vehicle.
The gas can was reportedly kept in the car to ensure that Fernandes would not run out of gas as she drove to various areas of New Jersey for work.
As noted in the report, Ferdandes’ Aug. 25 death was eulogized Friday after hundreds of workers in the fast food industry in various cities gathered in protests, seeking an increase in the minimum wage.
Fernandes’ friend Rochelle Sylvestre, 24, is quoted by Reuters as stating of the conversations about the controversial issue that have arisen out of news of the circumstances of her death, “Society has a way of looking down at people who try to make ends meet, who seek above the minimum wage… Maria won that battle. … Even in death she is bringing about change, and awareness and a movement in the job market.”
