Houston, TX – The proposed selection of history textbooks for use in Texas classrooms has triggered a new debate over what should be taught in the state’s schools. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), a range of complaints about 104 proposed books were heard by the Board of Education on Tuesday.
Complaints heard during the meeting ranged from accusations that some lessons held an anti-American bias, to many historic inaccuracies being contained in those chosen for use.
Jacqueline Jones, chairwoman of the University of Texas’ History Department, is quoted as stating when voicing her concerns, “We do our students a disservice when we scrub history clean of unpleasant truths… and when we present an inaccurate view of the past that promotes a simple-minded, ideologically driven point of view.”
The Board is set to approve new textbooks to be used in public schools in November.
