Baton Rouge, La. – A suspension recommendation has been given for a Port Allen judge accused of taking a free trip from an attorney. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), a disciplinary hearing has been scheduled in October for 18th District Judge J. Robin Free by the Louisiana Judiciary Commission.
Free reportedly received an all-expense paid trip to Texas four years ago, paid for by an attorney who worked on a personal injury case along with Assistant District Attorney Tony Clayton, in which the client received a $1.2 million settlement. The trip was taken in April, after the settlement was delivered in March.
Free is quoted in court files as stating of the matter, “Tony Clayton probably described it the best and — that it was just some friends going to look at some property together and boiling crawfish and hanging out…But looking back through this process of going through this where it says you should not receive a benefit. I realize that’s a violation.”
