New York – The first-ever transgender discrimination based federal lawsuits have been filed in U.S. courts. As reported by Reuters the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission recently filed a case in Florida and one in Michigan on behalf of two employees who were fired due to their changing their sex from male to female.
Robert Weisberg, an attorney with the EEOC who helped bring the Florida case, is quoted in the report as stating of the civil actions, “This will be a wakeup call to employers that they should take another look at their practices… Victims of transgender discrimination will become more aware there is a legal recourse.”
As noted in the report, the commission received 131 gender identity discrimination allegations last year.
The EEOC is reportedly considering other discrimination claims.
