Following 52 months of sales increases that have been bolstered recently by a full redesign and a popular new diesel model, production output of the Ram 1500 has been raised by an average of 100 vehicles per day and 28,585 units annually. Employees at the Warren Truck Assembly Plant in Michigan revamped the Ram 1500’s assembly line to accommodate that boosted capacity, making extensive changes from late 2013 to the summer shutdown this past August.
Establishing a Work Place Integration (WPI) practice and following the World Class Manufacturing (WCM) methodology, Warren Truck UAW-represented employees rethought the processes at 353 work stations, moving nearly 300 parts to improve assembly-line efficiency. More than 7,000 employee suggestions were considered to help ramp up production of the Ram 1500. To simplify installation of the pickup truck’s three different engines on the same line, parts were organized into kits that are now conveniently placed in each model.
“In recent years, no other truck brand has done more to boost capability, fuel efficiency and overall design than Ram, and those improvements have subsequently translated to higher demand for its pickup trucks,” said Tim Parker, dealer principal of Tim Parker Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, a Ram dealership in Hot Springs, Arkansas. “One of the more telling examples of that progress is the new Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, which is the most fuel-efficient pickup truck in America, yet can still tow more than 9,000 pounds.”
The 2015 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel houses a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine that produces 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque while returning up to 28 mpg on the highway. Buyers have responded favorably to the only light-duty diesel pickup truck on the market, recently prompting Ram Truck to raise the EcoDiesel model to 20 percent of the overall Ram 1500 production mix. That share is double the initial estimate from when the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel launched in the first quarter of this year.
