New York – Elizabeth Smart was recently the keynote speaker at the YWCA of Rochester’s 2014 Empowering Women Luncheon. As reported by the Democrat & Chroncile, Smart spoke about her experiences in being abducted from her home in 2002 and held captive for 9 months, as she told audience members to not let their pasts define their future.
Smart is quoted as stating during her speech, “I’ve been able to see laws change, I’ve been able to see new laws enacted to protect children, to protect women and I don’t regret a second of what’s happened because of what’s going on today.”
Smart, who is now 26, advocates for the cause of preventing crimes against children through the Elizabeth Smart Foundation.
She further stated while speaking, “There is a lot of evil in this world, a lot of terrible things going on, but I want you to know there is also so much good in this world and so many people who want to make our communities, our world a safer place and certainly these women here at the YWCA embrace that and they try to promote that.”
