Texas – The city of Houston has issued an order for a group of pastors to turn over sermons related to homosexuality. As reported by Fox News, the city has subpoenaed sermons linked to gender identity, homosexuality, and the first openly gay mayor of Houston, Annise Parker.
As noted in the report, ministers who fail to comply with the subpoena may be held in contempt of court. The move is stated to be the latest plot development in a continued battle over a new non-discrimination ordinance in Houston.
Attorney Christina Holcomb with the Alliance Defending Freedom law firm, which is representing five pastors in Houston, is quoted in the report as saying of the matter in a statement, “Political and social commentary is not a crime… It is protected by the First Amendment.”
