Australia – Three protestors made headlines after attempting to enter the Australian Parliament House wearing unapproved garments. As reported by The Washington Post, one of the protestors wore a Ku Klux Klan uniform during the staged protest.
As noted in the report, the protestors who were members of a group called Faceless, were acting in response to the recent revocation of a ban on partial burqa’s in the country’s legislature.
In accordance with the ban, which was revoked amid criticism, people who wore facial coverings were not allowed to sit in the public galleries of the parliamentary chambers. Visitors were also forced to remove their facial coverings before entering. The protestors said they were forced to remove their garments while Muslim women were permitted to wear burqas in the Parliament House.
Political scientist Jonathan Laurence is quoted as stating to the news source in regard to burqa bans, “Australian legislators want to avoid politicizing religious clothing, which is admirable.”
