U.S. – Researchers have found that the age of a child’s mother has an impact on his or her school performance. As reported by The Cut, the new research from the University of Michigan concluded that children of older parents tend to perform better academically than kids of young mothers.

As noted in the report, researchers found from an examination of data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten Cohort there was an achievement gap in areas of math and reading between kids whose mothers were 18 or younger when they were born and those born to mothers who were 19 or older.

Sandra Tang, a psychology researcher at the University of Michigan and lead author of the study, is quoted as stating of the findings in a press release, “These results provide compelling evidence that having a child during adolescence has enduring negative consequences for the achievement of the next generation.”
