Madagascar – A reported 47 people in Madagascar have died from an outbreak similar to the Black Death that killed many in Europe during the medieval era. As reported by WebProNews, over 100 cases of the bubonic plague are suspected to have developed since the beginning of the year.
Philemon Tafangy, the secretary general for the health ministry, is quoted as stating of the issue, “Two hundred households have been disinfected this month.”
As noted in the report, the plague is spread by fleas that have been infected by rats. Although it can be treated with antibiotics, it can kill an infected person within 24 hours.
Health workers have reportedly implemented a pest control campaign throughout at risk areas of the city.
