U.S. – A new study suggests that people who have undergone weight loss surgery may be subject to job discrimination. As reported by IANS, the findings suggest that stigma tied to body weight may influence the decisions of employers when seeking new hires.
According to the researchers, the issue may arise due to a perception of overweight people being lazy and not disciplined. The study found that job seekers who have lost weight through exercise and dieting are more likely to be hired than those who have lost weight through bariatric surgery.
Robert Carels from East Carolina University is quoted in the report as stating of the research, “Weight stigma is impacted by the method of weight loss for formerly obese individuals, not just obese individuals.”
Carels further stated, “While bariatric surgery often results in sustained long-term weight loss, increased efforts are needed to reduce stigma associated with bariatric surgery.”
