One of the main drawbacks of purchasing a convertible has always been the potential for cabin noise and turbulence, but as an auto brand known for its quiet, refined interiors, Buick is out to remedy that issue. The introduction of the new 2016 Buick Cascada at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this month marked the brand’s return to open-air driving after a quarter-century hiatus in the U.S., and the early indications are that it was well worth the wait.
Though it shares a front-wheel-drive platform with the Buick Verano sedan, the new Cascada sports a unique design with clean, swooping style lines and a slightly longer wheelbase and body. A smooth and responsive ride will be created by the combination of a 200-horsepower 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a HiPer Strut front suspension, a Watts Z-link rear suspension and a rigid body structure. When it is time to embrace the open air, the Cascada’s advanced soft top can be lowered in just 17 seconds at speeds up to 31 mph, and when that top is down, multiple layers of acoustic and thermal insulation will keep the cabin quiet and comfortable despite the conditions outside.
“When automakers design a convertible based completely on an existing sedan, it can create all kinds of style, sound and safety issues, so instead, Buick developed the Cascada purely as a drop-top so that it would live up the brand’s high standards,” said David McAvay, general manager of Mastria Buick GMC Cadillac, a Buick dealership in Raynham, Mass. “That means that Cascada buyers will receive striking style, a serene cabin and a strong body design regardless of whether the top is up or down.”
In addition to the use of high-strength steel, reinforced side sills and A-pillars featuring press-hardened steel, the 2016 Buick Cascada will further boost its crash safety with rollover-protection bars that automatically activate behind the rear seats if a potential rollover is sensed. Other active-safety technologies will be geared toward preventing accidents in the first place, ranging from lane departure warning and rear park assist to Rainsense windshield wipers and a rearview camera. When the new Cascada goes on sale in the spring of 2016, buyers will also benefit from a number of convenience features, including a Buick IntelliLink seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system, OnStar 4G LTE with a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot and rear seatbacks that can fold down electronically to open up more cargo space.
