California – Carl Djerassi, the inventor of the birth control pill, has died at the age of 91. As reported by WebProNews, Djerassi died after battling cancer related health complications.
As noted in the report, Djerassi’s birth control invention came about after the chemist led a research team in New Mexico in the development of key component norethindrone in 1951. Following his invention, Djerassi authored This Man’s Pill.
In 1969, Djerassi also wrote a paper related to the impact of contraceptives around the world.
Richard N. Zare, the Marguerite Blake Wilbur Professor in Natural Science at Stanford, is quoted in the report as stating of Djerassi, “I know of no person in the world who combined the mastery of science with literary talent as Carl Djerassi. He also is the only person, to my knowledge, to receive from President Nixon the National Medal of Science and to be named on Nixon’s blacklist in the same year.”
