New Hampshire – A thirty-two-year old hiker was found frozen to death after attempting to hike to the top of Mount Washington. Mount Washington is the highest peak in the Northwest.
According to WebProNews, the husband of Kate Matrosova took her to the base of the mountains of the Presidential Range in New Hampshire. Matrosova had reportedly chose to hike alone. She planned to start the hike by traveling to the top of Mount Madison, then making a hike through Mount Adams and Mount Jefferson and ending by standing at the summit of Mount Washington reports say.
Matrosova’s plan was circumvented by a snowstorm that subsequently blew through. After experiencing 100mph winds and blowing snow, she activated her personal locator beacon. Rescue teams; however, could not to locate her in the extreme weather conditions. Overnight temperatures dropped to 30 degrees below zero. Her frozen body was found the next day by a rescue team of Fish and Game officers, Mountain Rescue Services members and Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue members. She was found between Mount Madison and Mount Adams.
Fish and Game Lt. Jim Goss has expressed the hope that others will take Matrosova’s death as a warning. As reported in WebProNews, Goss said, “I guess if you are gonna hike in this type of weather you need to be in a more sheltered area, not up on an open exposed ridgeline. There’s just no room for error in a place like that.”
