California – Singer and songwriter Pharrell Williams has been ordered to pay millions in a lawsuit filed over the hit song “Blurred Lines.” As reported by WebProNews, a jury awarded the children of late singer Marvin Gaye almost $7.4 million, after they claimed Williams and others took from their father’s song “Got To Give It Up” to create the popular song featuring Williams, singer Robin Thicke, and rapper T.I.

The entertainers sought a “declaration of non-infringement,” when the allegations surfaced early on.

Attorney Richard Busch, who was subsequently hired by the family, is quoted as stating of the lawsuit, “We didn’t start this fight…Mr. Williams and his legal team portrayed this as the copying of a genre or a groove or a feel. That was not the case, as the jury found. It was the copy of a musical composition – melody and harmony and bass line and keyboard and other things.”

Williams and his partners are quoted as issuing the joint statement after the jury verdict saying, “While we respect the judicial process, we are extremely disappointed in the ruling made today, which sets a horrible precedent for music and creativity going forward.

They further asserted, “‘Blurred Lines’ was created from the heart and minds of Pharrell, Robin and T.I. and not taken from anyone or anywhere else. We are reviewing the decision, considering our options and you will hear more from us soon about this matter.”
