The author identified the woman in the story as “Jackie” and claimed that she was sexually assaulted repeatedly after going to a Phi Kappa Psi fraternity hosted party.
The report titled “A Rape on Campus” appeared in Rolling Stone magazine and prompted many to protest how the university handled the purported victim’s claims. The incident led to a campus suspension of all social functions.
According to a WebProNews report, when journalists saw discrepancies in the story, Rolling Stone called for an investigation. Following an analysis by a panel from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism the magazine retracted the report.
Erdely is quoted in the report as stating in her apology, “I want to offer my deepest apologies: to Rolling Stone’s readers, to my Rolling Stone editors and colleagues, to the U.V.A. community, and to any victims of sexual assault who may feel fearful as a result of my article.”
