The school rescinded an offer to renew Eledge’s contract after learning of his plans to marry his partner, claiming the action to be in violation of church tenet and a breach of contract. The school reportedly offered to allow him to return to the school if he ended his relationship.
Eledge, 28, who has been a teacher at the school since 2010, is quoted as stating of the matter, “Whatever happens, I love Nebraska and I love my job. I love working here… I want to do the right thing, but I don’t want to say anything that would hurt my job or anybody I care about. I’m scared and unsure and fearful. I’m just trying to finish out the year at this point.”
When asked if he would explore his legal options in the matter, Eledge said his current focus is only on teaching his students. He said he has received other offers for teaching next year.
