Boston – The defense attorney for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is now facing the challenge of saving her client from execution following his recent conviction. Tsarnaev was convicted by a federal jury on 30 counts Wednesday after being deemed responsible for multiple deaths in connection with bombings at the Boston Marathon in 2013.
According to an Associated Press report, the same jurors who convicted Tsarnaev are next set to determine his punishment after hearing evidence, which attorneys will soon begin presenting.
Tsarnaev could receive a sentence of life in prison or execution for his crimes. His attorney Judy Clarke has also worked for the defense in other high profile criminal cases including those of Susan Smith and Zacarias Moussaoui, both spared the death penalty.
David Hoose, a death penalty lawyer who helped a nurse convicted of killing multiple patients receive a life sentence says of the challenges Clarke is facing “The goal for her is to humanize Tsarnaev… Of course, that’s a difficult challenge for her when the defendant has — by the defense team’s own admission — committed such a horrific act. Yet, it’s certainly not impossible.”
