Los Angeles – Following a major shootout in Texas involving motorcycle gangs, authorities are taking steps to ward off violence as summer bike rallies begin. According to a Reuters report, concerns have been raised following the bloody shootout in Waco, which left nine people dead and resulted in the arrests of a reported 170 people.
Motorcycle rallies began across the country Memorial Day weekend. Last year multiple people were wounded and killed during a rally in Myrtle Beach leading some including South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley to call to end an annual event in the town. This year’s event took place a week after the Waco incident, leading authorities to increase surveillance and police presence in response to the intense public scrutiny and fears that now surround such events.
Some are predicting; however, that outlaw motorcycle clubs like the Bandidos, the Hells Angels and the Cossacks will opt to keep a low profile amid the controversy over the recent incident.
Steve Cook, executive director of the Midwest Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Investigators Association, stated of the issue, “A lot of them are going to be even more underground just because of all the heat.”
