California – A man convicted of killing intern Chandra Levy could get a new trial reports say. According to The Washington Post, prosecutors recently dropped their opposition to efforts made by the defense to have the case heard by a new jury.
Lawyers for Ingmar Guandique, 34, have argued for two years that a key witness who testified in the 2010 trial that led to his conviction lied during his testimony. The witness, who was a previous cell mate of Guandique’s alleged he had confessed to him that he killed Levy, who disappeared in 2001. Her body was found a year later at a location where she had gone jogging.
The murder case was sensationalized after it was revealed that Levy had an affair with married congressman Gary A. Condit. Police first considered Condit a suspect, but subsequently cleared him in the case.
