Mexico City – Reports say the United States now deports fewer Central Americans than Mexico. The shift has been a dramatic one since the U.S. requested help from the country for handling a sharp increase in illegal migration.
According to an Associated Press report, Mexico apprehended 92,889 Central Americans between October and April. During this time frame, 70,226 “other than Mexican” migrants, were detained by the U.S.
In the previous year, during the same months, the United States had apprehended three times the number of individuals that fit this category as Mexico.
New tactics used by Mexico in deportations have reportedly been a cause of concern to human rights groups. Tomas Gonzalez, a Franciscan friar who runs a shelter for migrants in southern Mexico stated commented that “Mexico is doing the dirty work, the very dirty work, for the United States”
Maureen Meyer of the Washington Office on Latin America think tank said of questions concerning the tactics, “What we have heard continuously in the past year is that migrants are being so rapidly deported that even some that might have wanted to request some type of protection, or who would have been eligible for some type of humanitarian visa because they had been victims of crime in Mexico, haven't had that opportunity.”
