Mississippi – A black man who died after an incident involving a white police officer in Mississippi died as a result of strangulation according to an attorney for the man’s family. The Associated Press reported that Chokwe Antar Lumumba told the news source that he was present when the family of Jonathan Sanders was briefed by law enforcement and told the man died from “manual asphyxiation.”

The attorney claims that the death was a homicide, not an accident. Sanders died on July 8 after having a physical encounter with Stonewall Police Officer Kevin Herrington. The man was stopped by the officer while driving a horse and buggy in a residential area.

Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman Warren Strain has referred to what occurred as a physical “altercation” but has not offered details of any investigation outcome writing in a text, “All we can say at this point is the policy of the Department of Public Safety is that we don't discuss ongoing investigations.”

Herrington's lawyer, Bill Ready Jr. stated of the case, “There's always another version of what truly happened… I think we need to all wait until MBI finishes its investigation.”
