New York – The New York Police Department is reportedly creating a
href=”http://news.findlaw.com/apnews/5bb432b6bb744806bd071540664f1b3d”>database to track lawsuits and complaints filed against officers. The Associated Press reported that the department is making an effort to root out officers who demonstrate problematic behaviors and patterns of potential misconduct through the database, which will be compiled from information from multiple city agencies.
Lawrence Byrne, deputy commissioner for legal matters, stated of the effort, “We are the first and only city agency to take a systemic look at that, not just officer by officer, and not just for purposes of discipline, but to also look for patterns.”
The move comes as the department is making an effort to reform its image following public outrage over incidents such as the death of Eric Garner in police custody.
Richard Emery, head of city watchdog agency the Civilian Complaint Review Board, said in praise of the effort, “In the same way they want to do predictive policing for crime, they also want to predict the success or failure with their officers… To train and guide people, give people the tools to be more successful than the current model might ascribe.”
