“Red-light running is a serious intersection safety issue across the nation. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Traffic Safety Facts 2008 Report, there were more than 2.3 million reported intersection-related crashes, resulting in more than 7,770 fatalities and approximately 733,000 injury crashes in 2008… An estimated 165,000 people are injured annually by red-light runners.”

The Administration has also stated in a survey regarding unsafe driving actions that 97 percent of drivers view other drivers running red lights as a major threat. Furthermore, a past study by Old Dominion University said that one in three people surveyed claimed to personally know someone who had been injured or killed in an accident involving someone running a red light.
Running red lights is deemed by some statistics to be a major cause of car accidents in the U.S. with an estimated 90,000 injuries resulting from these each year. These types of crashes have a high likelihood of producing some type of catastrophic injury. In areas like Houston, Texas many red light running crashes are reported annually even with the existence of things like red light cameras, which are designed to curb the number of individuals who get in a hurry and fail to stop at a red light. One example is a recent accident that left one person dead in Southwest Houston.

According to Houston personal injury attorney Amy Witherite, whose law firm Eberstein Witherite LLP has handled numerous car crash cases involving red light runners in Houston, one of the most common causes of these types of accidents is intoxicated or distracted driving. Says Witherite “in a lot of crashes involving drivers that have run a red light, the liable driver had been drinking prior to getting behind the wheel or was texting while driving, or acted negligently due to another distraction.”
Although a driver or passenger cannot predict when they will be in the unfortunate path of someone who fails to stop at a red light and crashes into them, victims in these accidents can take steps in the aftermath to hold red light runners responsible for their actions. Filing legal claims for compensation has been one of the key ways many have helped to deter repeat offenses by drivers who engage in negligent patterns of conduct on the road.
Witherite further suggests that individuals who have been involved in a Houston accident caused by another driver running a red light to take steps to learn what their legal options are in these matters saying “it is extremely important for those who have been hurt in a red light running car crash to get the legal support they need to recover any losses they are due as soon as possible.”
