Set to go on sale this fall, the base 2016 Lexus IS will downsize to a new four-cylinder engine that will replace the current 2.5-liter V6 unit, but impressively, that change will bring significant boosts in power, acceleration and fuel efficiency. The new 2016 Lexus IS 200t will supplant the outgoing Lexus IS 250 as the base model for the luxury sport sedan, housing a new 2.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine.
With 241 horsepower on tap, the new four-cylinder engine in the 2016 IS 200t will produce an extra 37 horsepower compared to the IS 250 while shaving nearly a full second off of the existing 0-to-60-mph time. Paired to a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission, the new turbocharged powerplant is estimated by Lexus to return up to 26 mpg combined in the IS 200t, which would be a 2-mpg improvement over the current base model. For buyers seeking capability in all four seasons, Lexus’ all-weather-drive system will be available on the range-topping 2016 IS 350 and standard on the new 2016 IS 300 AWD, which will fill out the middle of the model lineup with its 255-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine.
“The new generation of luxury-vehicle buyers expects a higher standard of performance that combines responsiveness with fuel efficiency, and the turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the forthcoming IS 200t was masterfully designed with those buyers in mind,” said Vincent Liuzzi, general manager of Lexus of Watertown, a Massachusetts Lexus dealer. “At the same time, the 2016 Lexus IS model lineup will still offer plenty of options for drivers who want to place an even greater emphasis on power and capability.”
In addition to its revamped lineup, the 2016 Lexus IS will be available with a new standalone option for its heated steering wheel and a new Premium Plus Package that includes rain-sensing wipers and a power/tilt telescopic steering wheel. The IS 350 will also come standard with new 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels for the 2016 model year. Having sold more than 23,000 IS models in the first half of 2015, Lexus will look for an even stronger second half of the year with the scheduled arrival of the updated 2016 lineup.
