Washington – Reports say that improvements in the economy have had an adverse effect on traffic in the United States. The Associated Press reported that roads in the country are now more congested than they have ever been, according to a study by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute and INRIX Inc.
The research says that four out of five cities have exceeded their traffic congestion levels from 2007. Among the most impacted commuters are those in Washington, D.C. who lose on average 82 hours annually delayed by traffic.
Included in the top 10 list of the worst cities to commute in are Houston, Chicago, Seattle, and Boston the study found.
Tim Lomax, who co-authored the report, is quoted as stating of the findings “Our growing traffic problem is too massive for any one entity to handle — state and local agencies can't do it alone.”
The report recommends solutions for fixing the problem that include improving the efficiency of existing road and transit systems and encouraging more flexibility in work schedules.
