Houston – Investigators have revealed that safety issues existed at a Houston-area chemical plant where multiple people died from a poisonous gas leak. The Associated Press reported that the in an interim report released by the U.S. Chemical Safety Board, officials said the safety procedures at the DuPont plant in La Porte, Texas do not protect workers or the public.
Vanessa Sutherland, the chairwoman of the board, is quoted as stating during a news conference of the matter “DuPont … has long been regarded as a safety leader in the chemical industry. But our investigation has uncovered lapses, weaknesses or failures in the company's safety, planning and procedures, safety management systems that could have and should have prevented the accident and this loss of life.”
Four workers at the plant were killed by exposure to methyl mercaptan, which is a material used in the manufacturing of insecticide. While draining waste gas from piping, workers were reportedly not aware that they were releasing the toxic gas that had accumulated in a storage tank and piping.
Five safety recommendations were made by the Chemical Safety Board in the interim report.
