Houston, TX – An investigation has revealed that a number of the bridge railings in Houston are not up to current standards. As reported by Click2Houston, the news comes after reports of a Houston school bus crash in which a bus flew over the bridge at 610 and Telephone Road, resulting in the deaths of two students.
The bridge in particular had not been tested in decades, crash testing researchers say. It was installed in 1970 and met standards that were developed in 1962.
The report notes that the Texas Department of Transportation has said that the bridge and railing are safe; however, some say the outdated railing raises concerns.
Rob Ammons, a Houston lawyer who represented families of the victims following the bus accident, said “The design of the railing did contribute to the bus leaving the bridge, and that perhaps a better-designed railing could have prevented or deflected the bus.”
William Williams, an associate research engineer at the Texas Transportation Institute at Texas A & M University, says of current vehicles “Our current vehicles today are taller. They're heavier. Our barriers are covering a greater spectrum of vehicles on the roadway.”
An investigation by KPRC 2 News reportedly located an additional 415 Houston area bridge railings that have been designated by the federal government as “not up to current acceptable standards.”
