More than 80 percent of adults with developmental disabilities are unemployed and Colorado ranks 42nd in the nation in fiscal efforts towards financing services for individuals with developmental disabilities—Signaling the need for support programs. Hearts ‘n’ Hands, an Arvada-based nonprofit organization that provides adaptive vocational training to adults with developmental disabilities, is taking action to meet these critical needs, recently expanding to a second facility located at 700 W South Boulder Rd., in Lafayette.
As part of the new facility opening, Hearts ‘n’ Hands launched an eight-week pilot program operating two-days-a-week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The organization already has six participants in the program, managed by staff and volunteers.
Similar to its headquarters in Arvada, the new facility will allow participants to produce the following:
· Home-made dog biscuits
· Jewelry and sports-themed para cord bracelets
· Decorative polymer clay pens
· Culinary salts, dried tomatoes and teas from on-site garden
· Mats for the Colorado homeless population
“We are thrilled to open a second facility in Lafayette in order to meet the critical needs of adults with developmental disablities,” said Shana Riley, founder of Hearts ‘n’ Hands. “As a parent of a special needs adult, I understand the difficulty of finding programs that provide prevocational training and life enrichment for this population, so we are excited to be able to open our doors to the Lafayette and greater Colorado community.”
The new location sits on approximately three acres of land and is geographically convenient for the organization’s Boulder and Northern Colorado participants. The location is expected to extend to a five-day schedule after the pilot program concludes. Visit http://www.heartsnhandsco.org for more information.
