Detroit – Volkswagen may be required to purchase back their diesel cars that are reportedly equipped with a software that rigs emissions tests. The Associated Press reported that some legal experts say the automaker is facing legal action that could force the issue.

Over 200 lawsuits have reportedly been filed in the past few weeks alleging the company marketed multiple car types as clean alternatives to those with gas engines, while knowing the vehicles released emissions that exceeded legal limits.

Volkswagen admitted that admissions tests in the U.S. were rigged by the software last month. Michael Horn, who is head of the company’s U.S. based operations, said to a congressional panel that the company was considering giving compensation to vehicle owners for their cars’ lost value.

The Environmental Protection Agency has said that 10 to 40 times the legal nitrogen oxide limit is emitted from the VW diesels.
