MPD Chemicals Supplying Bulk Quantities of Solid Sulfation Reagent

MPD Chemicals’ business subsidiary Monomer-Polymer and Dajac Labs is now supplying bulk quantities of the sulfation reagent called trimethylamine-sulfur trioxide complex (TMA-SO3). Sulfation is also known as O-sulfonation and is a major industrial chemical process used to produce a diverse range of products, including dyes and color intensifiers, pigments, pharmaceuticals, detergents, medicinals, agrochemicals and many other organic intermediates.

 

This trimethylamine-sulfur trioxide complex [CAS number 3162-58-1] provides for the sulfation or O-sulfonation of various substrates by utilizing this milder reagent versus traditional reagents like strong acids or sulfur trioxide itself. This reagent can also effect N-sulfonation reactions. The trimethylamine complex is known to be the most stable of all of these types of complexes. The product purity is offered at a 98% minimum and is a high melting white to off-white solid.

 

Additionally, the TMA-SO3 material is highly soluble in water; therefore, it has been used in sulfation reactions in water solutions. Substrates which are known to have been sulfated include steroids, polymers, carbohydrates such as starches and other polysaccharides, chitosan, cellulosics and many other small organic molecules. The use of the TMA-SO3 complex avoids potential extreme and violent reactions with liquid sulfur trioxide and some of the hazards associated with oleum/sulfuric acid.
