Billings, MT—An accident in an underground coal mine near Roundup resulted in an amputation of a miner’s foot on Thursday, March 24, 2011. The mining accident occurred around 6:10 a.m., at Bull Mountain Mine operated by Signal Peak Energy, reported the Billings Gazette.

According to officials, Jameson Ward, 27, of Billings is a longwall maintenance foreman who was repairing a chain on the longwall mining machine, when the accident occurred.

Ward was airlifted by a helicopter to Billings Clinic in fair condition. He had to have one foot amputated, while his other foot was severely damaged.

The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration and MSHA are reportedly investigating the mining accident.

A closure notice was issued for the equipment until investigations are completed.
