San Diego, CA — A pitbull bit a 6-year-old girl in her face in a City Heights yard on Sunday, August 28, 2011. Police were called to a house on the 4800 block of Auburn Drive around 11:50 a.m., reported Fox 5 San Diego.
Officials reported that the girl and a friend were playing in the yard when she threw candy into the pitbull’s face. The dog then lunged at the girl and bit her in the face.
The owner of the dog was also bitten while trying to help the little girl, San Diego County Animal Services reported.
The girl reportedly sustained several bite wounds to her face and chin, as well as one to her hand and one arm. She was rushed to the hospital where she is recovering from her dog bite wounds.
Animal control impounded the dog for quarantine, which is routine procedure under California law for any dog that bites someone.
Authorities stated that the dog was chained up in the yard at the time of the attack. When animals are chained up they can become aggressive because they cannot flee, which will cause them to react immediately and fight.
The fate of the dog is unknown, but it will stay at the animal shelter for at least 10 days and it may be euthanized.
Investigations are underway.
