Local Author writes New Book How Jill Learns to Read!

McHenry, IL – September 3, 2009 — McHenry, Il, Wow I can read! Hundreds of children ages 4-up state emphatically! How Jill learned to read. Using Phonics is great narrative for teachers, caregivers, or parents who want to teach their children how to read or to become better readers. How Jill learned to read using Phonics is a true story about a four year old girl named Jill and her struggles and successes in learning to read. As an experienced professional with over 10 years experience in teaching all learning styles as well as students with disabilities, and a graduate, from Roosevelt University with a degree in sociology and a minor in psychology has helped me assess children’s unique style of learning. With less than a third of eight graders being proficient in reading, I wanted to improve the chances of student’s success in school. Reading spans across the curriculum, so if you are proficient in reading it carries over to other subjects as well. Let me start at the beginning, about ten years ago I was employed at kinder care daycare in Algonquin Illinois to teach the Hooked on Phonics program. It was a great fit for me because I had taught my own children how to read using a similar program. The Hooked on phonics program grew in popularity and the children loved the program. However, the director advised me I could not change the program in any way. Being a single parent and getting limited hours at kinder care, along with the inability to expand the program to help assist the individual learning styles of the students, I started my own business named Funn with Phonics tutoring company. Where I developed up to date strategies and techniques for assisting children to become excellent readers in a fun active way. . . Children who have gone through this program are far exceeding grade level. Just think what a difference it would make not only in a child’s life but as a community as a whole if we grow a community of children to who are confident and passionate readers.

About the author; Betty Davis has a passion for teaching children to read. As a former teacher of grades k-12 she developed a highly successful program to make reading fun for children and now owns a tutoring company called Funn with Phonics.
