New York – A pedestrian safety program has helped to prevent student injuries around New York City schools. As reported by Reuters Health, the addition of traffic lights, speed bumps, and other fixtures have purportedly contributed to a decrease in the number of kids being injured during morning and after schools hours.

U.S. Congress provided more than $600 million to the Safe Routes to School program in 2005.

Margo Pedroso is quoted in the report as stating of the reduction in injuries, “We’re reducing injuries to kids and when you reduce injuries, parents get more comfortable with their kids walking and biking.”

A study funded by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health on injury rates around 30 schools has been published in the Pediatrics journal.
