Italy – A court in Italy has again found Amanda Knox guilty of murder in the 2007 death of British student Meredith Kercher. As reported by Time.com, Knox was sentenced to 28 years in prison after judges deliberated in the case for 11 hours. Knox’s former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito was also found guilty by the court.
Knox and Sollecito both served four years in jail after being arrested for Kercher’s death and convicted in 2009. They were released after a court of appeal acquitted them based on a “lack of evidence.” However, that verdict was overturned by Italy’s Supreme Court leading to their retrial.
Questions now remain as to whether the U.S. will extradite Knox back to Italy. Sean Casey, a former prosecutor, is quoted as stating to CNN prior to the verdict, “Under U.S. law, she was once put in jeopardy and later acquitted… Under the treaty, extradition should not be granted.”
Rebecca Shaeffer, an international law expert with Fair Trials International, is quoted in the report as stating of what may occur in the event that she remains in the U.S. “As a country seeking to extradite the person, [Italy] might contact Interpol for help or use a red notice (and international arrest warrant). This means she would be safe in the U.S. territory – but not if she travelled abroad. She could be seized were another country minded to act on the request by the Italian authorities. So traveling would be the biggest danger for her.”
