Los Angeles – CBS has been accused in a lawsuit of undermining the rights of former “The Beverly Hillbillies” star Max Baer Jr. to profit from the use of his fictional character, Jethro, in business deals. As reported by The Des Moines Register, the actor claims in his lawsuit that CBS entered into a secret agreement with the Des Moines-based Jethro’s BBQ restaurant chain to use the character after he had previously negotiated rights to it in a deal with them.
Bruce Gerleman, a Des Moines businessman and owner of the restaurant chain, has stated that the restaurant has not been named in the lawsuit saying, “We own the name, we own the trademark, it will always be Jethro’s BBQ in Des Moines, Iowa.”
An attorney for Baer has claimed; however, that the chain could potentially be added to the suit as a defendant. Beverly Hills attorney Jon Freis is quoted as stating, “We really haven’t gotten a lot of information from CBS regarding their agreement with Jethro’s (BBQ)… But it is certainly possible that Jethro’s could be added as a party later on.”
