Chicago – A federal judge has denied a motion by Purdue Pharma LP to reconsider the dismissal of a lawsuit against the drugmaker by the city of Chicago. According to a Law360 report, the city accused Purdue and four other drugmakers of contributing to a public health crisis of addiction and abuse by deceptively marketing opioid painkillers.
U.S. District Judge Jorge L. Alonso dismissed the claims against the other companies, leaving Purdue as the lone defendant. The judge cited the city’s failure to cite specific instances of physicians or the general public being mislead for the dismissal. However, the claim against Purdue remained due to information posted on its website about painkillers beginning a decade ago.
As noted in the report, opioids have become the most widely prescribed class of drugs in the United States. In 2010, drug companies profited approximately $8 billion in the sale of them. According to the lawsuit, also in 2010, approximately 16,000 deaths from drug overdoses were caused by opioids in the country.
