Madrid – A recent study suggests swimming in chlorinated pools increases cancer risks. As reported by AFP, Centre of Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) and Research Institute Hospital del Mar researchers found an increased risk of the disease as well as respiratory problems linked to chlorine use.
CREAL is quoted in the report as saying in a statement of the findings, “The evidence of genotoxic effects were observed in 49 healthy adults after swimming for 40 minutes in a chlorinated indoor pool.”
Manolis Kogevinas, CREAL co-director, is further quoted in the report as stating “The positive health impacts of swimming can be increased by reducing the levels of these chemicals… In no case do we want to stop swimming, but to encourage the reduction of chemicals in swimming pools.”
