New York – An asbestos inspector stricken with emphysema and wheelchair bound has been sentenced to jail after being accused of faking inspection results. As reported by the NY Daily News, 68 year-old Saverio Todaro was handed down the sentence Tuesday after presenting a number of family issues to the court in an attempt to stay out of jail.

Judge Kimba Wood is quoted in the report as stating to Todaro in the Manhattan Federal courtroom during sentencing, “The public needs to be able to trust inspectors like you… The inventiveness of your lies was outstripped only by the callousness with which you put the health and lives of New York City children and adults at risk.”

Todaro is reportedly set to begin serving his jail sentence within 90 days.
