California traumatic brain injury attorney alerts-A University of California San Diego pole vaulter suffers a traumatic brain injury after fall.

San Diego, CA—A University of California San Diego (UC San Diego) athlete tragically died from a head injury he sustained during a training session. The pole vaulter died Saturday night, September 5, 2009, due to his head injuries he sustained on Thursday, September 3, 2009, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

A UC San Diego pole vaulter identified as, Leon Roach, 29, a sophomore from Huntington Beach, was completing a jump when he missed the padding and landed on the concrete, and hit his head. The accident reportedly occurred during a routine rope swing drill around 7:19 p.m. on Thursday at the UC San Diego campus. Roach was immediately unresponsive after he hit his head on the concrete. Roach was transported by area emergency medical services (EMS) crews to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla for treatment of his traumatic brain injury (TBI). At 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, medical professionals declared Roach brain dead. An autopsy is planned for Roach to determine an exact cause of death. A statement released by UC San Diego stated, “Words cannot begin to express our sorrow. Our hearts go out to the family and friends of this remarkable student and valued member of the UC San Diego community.”
