The man sustained back and neck injuries as a result of the malfunction. Both the man and the boy, who are unrelated, were transported to a local hospital by area emergency medical services (EMS) crews for treatment of their injuries. The roller coaster was shut down as a result of the malfunction, and will remain closed until officials will the Occupation Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) http://www.osha.gov/ and Buena Park amusement park investigates the incident.

The Xcelerator roller coaster has an occupancy of 20 passengers, but the ride was not filled to capacity when the malfunction occurred. The roller coaster reportedly goes from zero to 80 mph in 2.3 seconds, and is inspected daily by the park’s maintenance staff.
