The college student was found guilty of the murder of her roommate and sentenced to 26 years.
Perugia, Italy (WiredPRNews.com) – Amanda Knox, the 22 year-old American college student who had been on trial for the murder of her British roommate, Meredith Kercher in Italy, has been convicted of the crime. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Knox was found guilty by an Italian court for the 2007murder on Friday.
Knox’s family released a statement following the verdict, expressing their intentions to appeal it, citing media attacks of Knox’s character influenced the jury’s decision. The family is quoted by the AP as saying in the statement, “It appears clear to us that the attacks on Amanda’s character in much of the media and by the prosecution had a significant impact on the judges and jurors and apparently overshadowed the lack of evidence in the prosecution’s case against her.”
Francesco Maresca, an attorney for the Kercher family, is further quoted in the report as stating of the sentencing, “The sentence is fair and satisfactory for the family… It was a heartfelt sentence. There is deep suffering on all sides.”
